Energy and Environment

As a traditional manufacturer and supplier of machinery and equipment for the ship-building industry, present-day KGW Schweriner Maschinen- und Anlagenbau GmbH took steps to explore new market segments after the reunification of Germany.

In this connection, the company remembered the capability of processing steel and metal and started to build up a second field of production besides the traditional product range for the shipbuilding sector.

Subsequently, the first contacts to manufacturers of wind power plants were established in 1992. The building of tubular steel towers and/or power houses was downright the thing which fitted into the company's profile since such products are similar to the crane towers of the shipbuilding program.

So the year 1993 was the beginning: the first tower for a wind power plant was manufactured at KGW after having invested money and met the requirements to production space.

After the prototype had been tested and evaluated, a batch of 9 towers were produced in the same year. The production capacity was enhanced in the following years and the number of orders rose considerably.

Today, the energy and environmental technology field constitutes the main business of KGW with an annual output of about 200 towers, however, products for the shipbuilding industry are still part of the production program as job orders on the basis of customer specifications.
