Towers for Wind Power Plants

Towers for wind power plants have been part of KGW's range of products since 1993. Starting with a batch of 9 towers, about 200 towers are now manufactured and delivered annually.

The tower segments are rolled, welded and surface-treated on three production lines at KGW according to state-of-the-art production methods. The high-performance rolling facilities process a plate thickness up to 70 mm. In the directly adjacent large assembly hall, tower segments measuring 33 meters in length, up to 5 m in diameter and weighing up to 65 tons are processed.

As a result, KGW can apply its strength especially in tower sizes between 40 and 100 meters in the megawatt range, or whenever the circumstances require dimensions that go beyond the every-day norm.

To achieve a perfect quality, the company deploys electronically controlled automatic submerged-arc welding units with sensor equipment and camera monitoring of the weld seam. Automatic welding units ensure highest precision. The use of plates treated with a special primer, which protects them completely from corrosion from being cut to size through to delivery, underlines the high-quality standard, also during final painting. By means of a combined turning and handling facility for tower segments KGW ensures that damage to the tower surfaces is excluded in the paint shop.

KGW meets the requirements to the quality standard according to DIN ISO 9001:2000; our quality management system has been certified by LRQA since 1992.

Depending on the requirements of the plant manufacturer, KGW towers can be equipped completely with platforms, vertical ladders with safety system, cables with terminal units to customer specification, any additional facilities required, and elements for flange connection. In addition, machine supports can be, either as structural steel elements or as a complete power house including assembly.

An inhouse CAD-supported development department is available to provide detailed solutions at customers' requests.

Numerous references from German wind power plant manufacturers vouch for KGW towers. In addition, KGW delivers worldwide, e. g. to Argentina, Spain, the Netherlands and the USA. This is favored by the company's location near the Baltic Sea ports of Wismar and Rostock from where shipment can take place.

Also, KGW has become active in the offshore field. Regarding the manufacture of towers for offshore application, the comprehensive know-how gained from the shipbuilding sector turns out to be especially advantageous and valuable.
As an initial project, the tower for the first offshore wind power plant in the Baltic Sea was made by KGW.
